I am often asked if the Milky Way Really looks like this. The short answer is yes. But there is more to it than that. When the moon isn't out and on a cloudless night with little humidity in the air you need to drive out in the country. I live in Amarillo which has a population of about 200,000. To get far enough from the light pollution to get this photo, I have to drive about 80 miles into the country. The next thing you have to do is take about 30-45 minutes to let your eyes adjust to the dark. Look at your phone or turn the dome light on in your car and you reset the time to let your eyes adjust. Sitting still for 45 minutes looking at the night sky isn't as easy as it sounds. But then if you do that, you see something like this. For me, this process is one of decompression and quieting the mind. The Milky Way has become one of my favorite things to photograph.
