TEXAS is the longest running outdoor musical in the United States kicking off season 1 in 1966, which incidentally makes it as old as I am. The play is at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon with the canyon wall as the backdrop and stars and sunset... Being outside in the canyon is amazing. BTW Palo Duro Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the United States and is worth visiting but add in the play for crazy wonderful!
The play opens with a lone rider galloping across the rim of the Canyon 600 feet above the audience, mere inches from the rim. Talk about thrilling. Any Texan worth their salt gets goose bumps at the Lone Star Flag flying horse. WOW. Getting to the trail is not the easiest task. The trail is rocky and there are a few climbs. The riders (two go for safety and to support each other but on one is seen by the audience) have to lead the horses in several places. I discovered one such place offers me a perfect shot from the canyon floor and because they are against the sky and often the setting sun, I get wonderful silhouettes. Here is one of the wrangles from season 55: Malory Fulwider. I asked Malory to do some pose for me here before hand and perfectly she tipped her hat for me. I think this is one of my favorite photos of the season!
